Costa del Sol

The Costa del Sol is the most developed part of the Coast with many villages and towns for their welcomed visitors. The Mediterranean Sea is warm and safe and most coastal towns have modernised promenades to saunter along at leisure, very often bars and restaurants pave the way. There are no shortage of bars, restaurants, discos and nightlife around the Costa del Sol. The restaurants deliver local, national and international cuisine that will delight your palate and the choice is endless!

There is the Eastern Costa del Sol and the Western Costa del Sol and this is marked from Malaga City & the International Airport that attracts a large percentage of Spain's International Tourism. The Western Costa del Sol coastline, spreads 100kms beginning at Malaga City spreading westward all the way to the border of Cadiz province. The International Airport at Malaga is 8km west of the city and the coastal highway, the N340. 

Costa del Sol has many contrasts such as the ideally situated San Pedro de Alcantara, once famous for sugar cane that remains an unspoilt pueblo with a refreshing appeal of its own, yet, just 10 kms from all the glamour & glitz of Marbella and Puerto Banus and only a few minutes drive away from the beautiful Sierra de Ronda mountain range where an inland road leads you to the historic town of Ronda, which stands on a towering plateau in the Malaga Province. Ronda also houses Spain's oldest and most beautiful Bull Ring and when there are no fights around, it is open to visitors to wander around. The spectacular views down the gorge are breathtaking. Estepona is also only a 20 km drive away from San Pedro.

The Eastern Costa del Sol is a 54 kms. Stretch of coast to the East of Malaga City and this side of the Costa del Sol is not as highly developed as the Western Costa as the cliffs of the Sierra Almijara climbing up to 200 meters, joins the sea. This part of the coast ends on a coastal plain of urban landscape at Mara surrounded by traditional agriculture. 

On the Western part of the Sierra Almijara in Malaga province, this is known as Axarquia and here you will find attractive villages dating from Moorish times. It is also superb hiking country and ideal for climbers with its numerous steep mountainsides to be conquered.

The most important Urban Centre at this end of the coast is Nerja which has grown rapidly providing most of the Eastern Costa del Sol's accommodation for tourists.
One of the main attractions here, are the Nerja caves that are open to the public and considered an important find to tourism. The caves also host an annual music and dance festival within its caverns that attracts a huge following. 

There are a number of coves and some lovely beaches to be found in this area.

There is so much to see and to do whilst visiting the Costa del Sol, it is difficult to select just a few places to visit as the coastal resorts entice you to the beaches and the sea whereas the inland road entices you to the white washed villages within the mountain ranges that have so much to offer in culture, flora & fauna & in exploring the many caves or villages that hide amongst the hills & the mountain ranges.
