Benissa is a lovely small town set in the northern part of the province of Alicante. In the last 20 years the local authorities have rescued the historical part of the town from gradual decay & have done an excellent restoration of the town's impressive seventeenth and eighteenth-century town houses, its narrow streets, its churches and its town hall.
Benissa lies on the main N332 road & the A7 motorway runs past the side of it. This makes for easy access to Valencia or Alicante & the many towns that lie between these two major cities.
Benissa is only a ten minute drive from many beautiful beaches in Calpe & Moraira. The area abounds with white sand and crystal-clear water & the contrasting but beautiful tall mountains, wide valleys with unusually green countryside.
Benissa has been described as a "little Europe", because it is home to thousands of Europeans from Germany, Scandinavia, Britain, France, Holland & Belgium who live in and around the town. They have been attracted to Benissa by the beautiful countryside, the delightful coastline & the excellent climate that has been declared one of the healthiest in the world by the World Health Organisation.
Contrasting with other places along the Spanish Mediterranean coast with a large international community, Benissa has integrated nationalities from all over Europe without losing any of its distinct Spanish character and beauty, and you get the feeling that everyone who lives here enjoys living in this international community with a distinctly Spanish flavour.
If culinary delights are your bag then you should know that within a twenty minute drive of Benissa your choice of first class, very reasonably priced, restaurants number in excess of 150!
